Taverna Review

Taverna hosted me for brunch last Sunday and I tried an array of their brunch dishes! This review reflects my experience and thoughts on the restaurant.

Brunch Deets

Brunch is served on Saturday and Sunday from 11am -3pm. The full menu is also available so you can get a pizza with your eggs bene if you like. All bottles of rose are HALF OFF during brunch!!! Entree items range from $10-$19.

Ambiance

I took my mom with me and we made a super cute mommy daughter date out of it. The weather was perfect so we dined al fresco! Their patio has a very light airy feel to it with wicker chairs and bright white linen, colorful flowers line the side. It’s great for people watching in ROD. You might just loose yourself and think you’re in the Mediterranean!

The decor inside is beautifully thought out. From the art deco style tile to the vaulted ceilings with unique box ceilings. There is also charming exposed brick and large chandeliers that remind me of mid evil times. There are large black tufted booths with a mix of tables inside. The bar area is spacious and great for a drink during their happy hour. The decor is dark but doesn’t give it a dreary feel. I personally loved it!

The Food

Okay now to the part I know y’all really want to hear about. The food! I tried the vanilla french toast, the hash, eggs benedict, and beignets (on the regular menu).

The hash was by far my favorite and turned out to be the hi-light of the meal. The eggs were cooked to perfection, like little clouds stacked atop a meat and potato mountain. The meat was so tender and juicy and the potatoes added a great bite and texture. The presentation by Chef Gregory was beautiful!

The beignets are also a must order item! They come hot and fresh, the overall consistency is light and pillowy. The cappuccino sauce is delightful on top as well. Adds a unique spin to the classic New Orleans dish.

The vanilla french toast and eggs benedict were also great but not as outstanding as the previous 2 dishes I mentioned. The eggs bene is a classic and theirs sticks true to the original. The eggs were perfectly cooked and the hollandaise sauce was rich and creamy. The crabmeat was good but I would stick with the bacon to get that more salty / savory taste. They also have smoked salmon which now I’m wishing I had tried.

The vanilla french toast had a yummy vanilla mascarpone on top with 3 thick slices of french toast and a side of fruit. The vanilla flavor comes thought and I also drizzled mine with some of the cappuccino sauce from the beignets. So good!

Unfortunately, I was not a huge fan of the Sangria. It was VERY tart and VERY strong. I don’t like my drinks overly sweet and I usually love Sangria but none of the fruit flavors came through on this one. Next time, I’ll get the Rose !

Service

In Italy, a taverna is a special place where customers become family and friends. I experienced just that at brunch. My waiter was very attentive and extremely personable ! The manager Vivian is so sweet and a joy to talk to. Head chef Gregory was very helpful and friendly. The service was top notch!

Overall Thoughts

Taverna is a lovely place for brunch, regardless of if you sit on the patio or inside the ornate dining room. The menu offers something for everyone! My recommendations for brunch would be the Taverna Hash, New Orleans Style Beignets, and a Pizza (I’ve tried their pizza before previously – it’s wonderful)with a bottle of HALF PRICE rose.

***I’m sad that the Houston location doesn’t offer $2 mimosas & Bellinis like the Austin location. Would love to see some type of mimosa special on the menu.

Taverna is located at 4444 Westheimer Road in the very front of River Oaks District. Catty corner to Le Colonial and short straight shot down from Steak 48

Thanks for reading !
