How He Proposed

The Backstory

Michael and I started dating back in college, he went to UH and I went to UT Austin. We casually dated for a while then we decided to make it “FB Official” on April 21, 2013. We were long distance for 2 more years until I officially moved back to Houston. We’ve been to 5 countries together, new careers, navigating our 20s and most recently surviving 2020 in a 1 bed room apt. There’s no one else I’d rather do life with, he’s the macaroni to my cheese, best friend, love of my life and I can’t wait to be his wife!

Earlier this year, Michael and I were enjoying Valentine’s Day dinner and he just randomly asked, “How does one propose to Melody Price ?”….I could almost feel the anxiety he was feeling when he asked me that question. I could tell that he had been wanting to propose but he was afraid of somehow disappointing me with a lackluster proposal. I reassured him that I would be more than happy with whatever way he decided to ask me. Because at this point (8 years in), I just wanted him to ask LOL.

The Proposal

It was the month of May and Michael asked me if I wanted to go to Austin for my birthday and of course I said yes because we hadn’t been to Austin all year. Austin will always hold a special place in our hearts because its the city where we fell in love. Early on when we first start dating, we went to all the touristy landmarks of Austin including Mount Bonnell, a famous overlook of the Colorado river with views of the city and rolling hills. I’ve always been mesmerized by the view and I always mentioned to him how romantic the spot was.

We were talking about things that we wanted to do in Austin for the weekend and he was very adamant about us having a picnic at the top of Mount Bonnell because we had such good memories there. I felt it was strange because he doesn’t really plan things, but I didn’t think too much into it.

Michael and I hiked up Mount Bonnell with all of our picnic stuff and managed to find a somewhat secluded spot. I was laying out the picnic blanket and when I turned back around to grab the food, he was holding the most beautiful ring. I honestly could not believe it, I said YES before he even got the chance to say anything. I just stared at him and the ring in shock for a few moments. After that, everything is kind of a blur, I remember his lips moving but I couldn’t tell you what he said lol. I always thought I would ugly cry during the proposal but there were no tears – just smiles, pure joy and lots of hugs and kisses.

I really wanted a photographer there to capture the moment but in true Michael fashion, he didn’t listen lol! We ended up asking another couple to snap a few photos of us right after the fact and they actually came out really great!

The Ring

HE DID SO GOOD! Like WOW! Believe it or not, we never went ring shopping together! I had showed Michael what I wanted a couple of times and also verbally told him I wanted a round halo ring but I left everything else up to him. I also mentioned to that I wanted it to be a conflict free diamond if possible. I love the band and setting he chose. The ring is from Brilliant Earth! They specialize in conflict free and ethically sourced engagement rings. My ring is stunning and I can’t stop staring down at my hand.

What’s Next?

Right now we are just enjoying being engaged! We’re still deciding if we will do a traditional wedding, destination wedding, or just elope. If we do go the traditional route, we will be keeping it small and intimate. However, I will be doing all of the pre-wedding things: engagement party, bachelorette party, bridal shower … get ready for all the bride related content!
