Pitaya Picks – “Top 3 Places in Houston To Pick up a Pitaya Bowl”
First, if you’re not familiar with pitaya, it is basically acai’s “pretty in pink” 3rd cousin. Pitaya is also known as “Dragonfruit” and this super-fruit is packed with iron, vitamin A, and antioxidants. According to Food as Rx, acai and pitaya’s nutrient profiles are essentially identical, save 2 differences. Acai has more fat (omega 3s) and pitaya has more complex carbs.
Now that you know what Pitaya is – let’s get down to where you can enjoy a refreshing pitaya bowl!
2001 COMMERCE ST.
This “Casual Café” is already well-known for being a trendy hipster hot spot around EaDo. Everyone raves about the avo-toast and macaroons, but their pitaya bowls are a hidden gem. It’s definitely a must try for brunch connoisseurs. Tout Suite keeps their bowls simple. The pitaya is blended with banana and topped with house-made granola and fresh seasonalfruit. “Simple” is definitely a synonym for “delicious” at Tout Suite and the house made granola is a must try!
304 Gray Street
Agave nectar is blended and/or drizzled on every item that Nekter serves on its menu! The juice bar’s mantra is that “healthy can be affordable” and the integrity of their menu is kept in high regard with only “fresh, natural, and raw ingredients.” The unique pitaya base is what makes this one of the best spots to indulge. Nekter blends coconut butter, banana, pineapple, and coconut water with the pitaya which gives it a creamy texture with pinacoloda island vibes.
3773 Richmond Ave.
The spot is fairly new! JuiceWell opened about 3 months ago and it’s the sister store to Sustain Juicery. The customer service is awesome and they have a nice outdoor patio to enjoy your tropical snack in the sunshine. The bowls are a large portion, definitely worth the $9 spent. My favorite thing about JuiceWell is that you are able to build your own pitaya bowl by checking off a premade form. Most smoothie bowl joints make you pick between one or two options, but here, the combinations are endless! It’s literally Burger King for bowls so check it out and have it your way!
