“Homemade” Superfood Cinnamon Rolls

Hey Broke Foodies,

I received products from Bee Keeper’s Naturals last week through Shop N Shout. Sidenote: If you’re a blogger or influencer, I would definitely consider signing up. You can pick through a catalog of items and as long as you meet the requirements and post about it they will send you the product for free. I love it because you are in control and you can pick items as you would if you were just normally shopping online.

I was especially intrigued by the Superfood honey with cacao that I received! After reading reviews on both the beekeepers natural website and IG – I discovered that the superfood honey is comparable to a healthy version of crack in a jar AKA nutella. The main differences are that the consistency of the superfood honey is a lot thinner than actual nutella and the chocolate flavor is more bold almost like dark chocolate.

So what in the world is CACAO?!

Cacao,  not to be confused with cocoa, is a superfood made from minimally processed cacao beans from the cacao tree seed pod. According to Paleo Blog,  cacao can lower blood pressure, protect your heart, regulate insulin levels, and reverse oxidative damage (antioxidant). The superfood cacao can be found in many forms such as butter, nibs, or powder. Once again, this is NOT cocoa. Cocoa is a heavily processed form of the cacao bean and it doesn’t have the same superfood properties because during processing the high heat levels change the molecular structure of the food.

But… back to the actual cinnamon rolls

I was browsing through Pinterest and saw Paper & Stich’s recipe for “Semi- Homemade Nutella Cinnamon Rolls” and I realized this would be the perfect recipe to try my superfood honey in. Here is my adapted version below!

Chocolate Superfood Cinnamon Rolls

Serves 6

Cinnamon Roll Ingredients

  • 1 roll of Pilsbury butter flake crescent rolls
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon sugar ( I literally mixed 1/2 tbsp. cinnamon & 1/2 tbsp. sugar together)
  • 3 tablespoons of superfood honey

Drizzle Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup of powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of milk (almond milk works too)
  • Splash of vanilla

Instructions

Sprinkle flour on your work surface and roll out crescent dough. You can either pinch the perforations together so that you’re left with one full sheet without holes or you can make the dough into a ball and then roll it out if your prefer. I rolled mine out. Make a nice rectangle that is the original thickness of the crescents.

After you roll it out, spread the superfood honey evenly over the surface. Next, sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture on top of the spread. Roll the dough up from the short end into a log. This might get a little messy and some of the filling might ooze out but that’s normal. After rolling, make 1 in slices to create your rolls. Arrange on a baking sheet and bake according to the instructions on the crescent roll package.

While the rolls are baking. Make the icing by combining  sugar, milk, an vanilla. Once cinnamon rolls come out of the oven, let them cool slightly then drizzle with icing and superfood honey.

Serve immediately.

These turned out AMAZING! Wayyy better than I expected! Not to mention, it took about 5 mins to prep! I usually just buy cinnamon rolls but now since I know how easy and delicious it is to make them your self, I might not go back.

Let me know what you think 🙂
