First Look: SusieCakes Bakery
I had the pleasure of attending a private preview at Rice Village’s newest bakery, SusieCakes. The event featured a 7 course cake and wine pairing (yes, I said 7!). Cake + Wine = HEAVENLY btw. Not only were the layer cakes scrumptious, but Susie herself was there to tell us about her brand and the SusieCakes difference. With a prime location, friendly staff, stand-out décor, & cakes that taste just like grandma used to make – SusieCakes is sure to eat up the competition!
The inspiration to create and share cakes, like their best-selling Vanilla Celebration Cake, manifests from recipes she made with her two grandmothers, Mildred and Madeline, in “Susie blue” Pyrex mixing bowls while growing up. The 7 staple cake flavors include: Old-Fashioned 6 Layer Chocolate Cake, Susie’s Southern Red Velvet Tropical Coconut Cake, Luscious Lemon, Classic Marble, Carrot Cake, and The Celebration Cake. The ones mentioned above are baked in 6” or 9” rounds. Plus, there’s no need to pre-order (unless you need a sheet cake) because cakes are available daily by the slice or whole!!! Yes, that’s right …. No more forgetting to order a b-day cake or resorting to a dry, poorly decorated back-up cake from your local chain grocery store. #GameChanger
All of the cakes I tried were phenomenal! But there were 3 that were major stand outs for me.
- Luscious Lemon CakeVanilla cake with fresh and tangy lemon curd filling topped with vanilla butter cream frosting. The cake is light, clean, and refreshing. The tartness from the curd cuts through the sweetness of the buttercream perfectly!
- Celebration CakeVanilla frosting on vanilla cake. Beautiful presentation with Susie Blue butter cream frosting and all the fun colored sprinkles inside. The vanilla flavor is pure and intense, while the cake is dense and moist. A simple and classic cake executed beautifully.
- Carrot Cake Spice cake with cream cheese frosting and praline filling. I normally don’t even like carrot cake, but the flavors in this one all came out perfectly. It wasn’t too sweet and the ratio of carrots to cake was spot on !
Don’t be fooled, the bakery doesn’t just stop at cake. They are also baking up cookies, cupcakes, pies, puddings, bars, and brownies from scratch daily. Their “made without gluten” items include Susie’s Nutty (2 peanut butter cookies stuffed with PB buttercream), Flourless Peanut Butter Cookies, and Banana Pudding. At this time, there are no vegan options on the menu.
Susie, Susan Sarich, is a total “girl-boss” & complete sweet heart! Her passion for her business, woman empowerment, and community is extraordinary. She is a no-nonsense kind of girl when it comes down to using only the finest and freshest ingredients like pure vanilla extract and European butter. Her website even boasts, “If you can’t spell it. We don’t bake with it”. As a former food service manager, her commitment to making sure that women in the hospitality industry have a work/life balance resonates strongly with me. I understand the late night, early morning, no holidays off struggle. The bakery has also donated $1,000,000 worth of baked goods to charitable organizations. Now that’s some serious #CakeWithACause. Her mission shows that she truly cares about her SusieCakes fam and the communities they touch!
This is SusieCakes first Houston concept, with over a dozen bakeries sprinkled throughout Cali and three shops in the DFW area, the bakery is sure to sweeten the pot in HTX!
